How to Check Tire Tread: The Penny Trick

So…. you’re starting to notice some wear on your tires and you’re wondering, is it time for new rubber all the way around or can I just keep rolling?

Probably the first thing you need to think about is your tire “tread.” Treads are the deep grooves in the section of the tire that actually hits the road. A tread’s whole function is to give water, mud, snow, etc. a place to go as a tire rolls through the stuff. Without the tread, mud, snow – even water – would literally lift the tire off the road. So those grooves are important because they help the rest of the tire stay in contact with the road. And of course, if your tires stay in contact with the road, your car has a lot better chance of staying on the road, too

So it is tread depth – (the depth of the grooves in the part of the tire that contacts the road) – that will determine whether it’s time for you to invest in a new set of tires.

How do you check tire tread for yourself? Simple. A penny or a quarter will do the trick.

The Penny Test for Tires - How it works
Just take a penny, hold it vertically with Lincoln facing you and place the dated section of the coin into several tread grooves across the tire. If part of our 16th President’s head is always hidden by the tread, you have more than 2/32" of tread depth remaining.

If you repeat the penny measurement -- this time with the Lincoln memorial facing you but upside down – check to see if the top of the building is completely hidden. If so, it means you have more than 3/32” of tread depth remaining.

After you establish a ballpark tread-depth for the first section of your first tire, begin checking tire tread depth on your other tires. To do this, just repeat the process – and be sure to check a couple of different sections of each tire, including the middle grooves. Measure inner and outer grooves, as well. That will tell you whether your tires are wearing evenly.

If the penny test for tires reveals that the treadwear is uneven, but there is still enough depth to avoid replacing the tires, first check the tire pressure. Then think about having the wheels re-balanced or the vehicles “alignment” checked

GM Foundation and Chevrolet Donate to ‘Help 4 Oklahoma’

Forgotten Harvest leads aid gathering for Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma and tornado victims

The General Motors Foundation is pledging $50,000, and Chevrolet is donating a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado full-size pickup to Forgotten Harvest to assist with the organization’s “Help 4 Oklahoma” campaign to get supplies to the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma and help those impacted by this week’s devastating tornadoes.

“The GM Foundation’s $50,000 donation to Forgotten Harvest for ‘Help 4 Oklahoma’ is just the first step in our support for those impacted by the tornadoes,” said Selim Bingol, GM’s global vice president of Communications and Public Policy and the chairman of the GM Foundation. “Our employees want to help and will volunteer locally at Forgotten Harvest, and we will engage our plants and other facilities across the U.S. to collect food to help this effort.”

To implement "Help 4 Oklahoma," Forgotten Harvest is partnering with the GM Foundation, Chevrolet, Art Van, WDIV-TV 4, WJR AM 760 and The Detroit Media Partnership.
“We will be collecting shelf-stable foods, and medical and hygiene products for the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma,” said Susan Goodell,” CEO of Forgotten Harvest. “Vehicles will be instrumental in the implementation of this effort and we thank Chevrolet for this generous donation.”

Said GM North America President Mark Reuss, vice chair of the GM Foundation: “Chevrolet continues its support of local organizations and disaster relief efforts with the donation of a Chevrolet Silverado to Forgotten Harvest. GM and the GM Foundation will support ‘Help 4 Oklahoma’ with the full breadth of our operations.”

Since 2004, the GM Foundation has provided more than $7 million to global disaster relief efforts. The Foundation is also a member of the American Red Cross Disaster Responder Program to ensure that the Red Cross has funds on hand to provide immediate relief when disaster strikes.

Anyone interested in donating to “Help 4 Oklahoma” may call 888-332-7140, visit www.forgotenharvest.org, drop off shelf-stable items at any Art Van location, or visit www.redcross.org.

Overall Score: 5
Been a nightmare going from place to place but once I came here Sal was more than helpful to get my into my new Chevy Sonic. There were so many walls bein hit but not once did he stop trying his best to get what I needed within my budget. I felt like I was being taken very well care of from the entire Rotola Team. From sales to service department everyone was pushing to make sure I left with the car I wanted for a price I could afford. Highly recommend this dealership and in particular Sal. Great guy doing a better job

Best service experience ever with all my vehicles that I have brought in for service. Phillip Candido went above and beyond what I would expect from a service technician every time and I ONLY ask for him. He explained everything thoroughly and was very pleasant to deal with. While my cars were being repaired I was given several options to what I could do , wait or given a shuttle ride home and back to the dealership. Pricing was great and Job was done in a timely matter. Great Dealership for Service and would Highly recommend to others. Phillip Candido is a true asset to this fine Corporation and Will have me returning to keep my Vehicles in Top Shape. Roland N
